Japan has a tied relationship with cellphones. So tied that mobile phone users have been tuning their mobile devices for a decade. So tied that innovative GPS service developed in the US could only find its earlier adopters in Japan. So tied because now Japanese accessing the Internet through their cellphones outnumbered those connecting to it from their computer.
“Browsing the web and checking email remain the most popular uses for the Internet, although consumer-generated media is becoming increasingly popular. In March 2006 there were 8.7 million bloggers in Japan versus 7.2 million users of social networking services, the report said.”
IDG News also notes that “Telephone services via the Internet such as VoIP. As of March this year there were 10 million IP telephone lines. A newer type of Internet telephone service that allows consumers to keep their existing phone number is also proving popular and there were 1.4 million of these lines by the end of March, the report said.”
