Japan giant mesh network: Over 100 Japanese cities

Japan is increasing its lead in wireless broadband. NTT West is planning a wireless mesh network that will spread across 100 Japanese cities, and will open broadband access to more than 50 million, about 40% of the total population.

The mesh network will operate in the 4.9 to 5.0 GHz frequency and provide broadband service to corporate enterprises and municipalities. Some spectrum will be allocated for use by public safety and emergency services, says the release.

NTT West partners Strix, a wireless mesh vendor, and will provide voice, video and data services. Accessing the network shouldn’t be free and no financial details has been undisclosed.

Of course, it’s easier to deploy such a mesh network in a tiny highly-populated country that in Australia or in Canada. But when you know broadband in Japan has reached the 1 gigabit per second level, it’s impressive.
