Would iPhone, the mighty phone iPod, stream video too?

Besides design, what would make the iPhone stand out from the smartphone competition? Not its ultra connectivity, not its social features, but streaming videos. Scott Ard, from CNet, believes “it would separate iPhones from the billions of cell phones already on the market, and it fits with the concept of keeping the computer as the hub of your digital lifestyle.”

In this perspective, Apple would stick to the trend set by rival Microsoft and Nokia with their respective Zune and N95. Microsoft insists that Zune would mature into a multi-service handset, while Nokia pulls out a 8GB cellphone with video support.

But Apple would also follow Hutchinson X-Series new offering, but letting setting a Slingbox-like service. IPhone users would download songs and videos from iTunes, store them in their computer hard drive and stream them to their iPhone whenever they want.

And unlike the X-Series, the idea won’t push customers against their broadcasters’ terms and conditions. As they own their contents, they could play them as often they want. Smart.
