IMSafer rises the level of parental control on IM

Instant messengers are like the second mobile phone for kids and young adults. Studies confirmed what we already know, and the IM penetration in other categories of population is increasing as IMs one by one go mobile.
And as scammers and/or sexual predators hang out on MySpace, both those trouble people tease kids on IM. One month, Windows Live Messenger has softly introduced a anti-pedophilia button both on its Live and MSN messengers.
But let’s go a step beyond Microsoft. IMSafer intends to do the same on all IMs. The service comes out of stealth mode today, and provides “an additional level of protection to children and teens who chat online via instant messenger services”, says the PR.
Briefly said, it’s a text filter that detects “inappropriate” pattern in a chat conversation. When a text is flagged not safe for children, their parents receive an email notification that includes the screen names of the people in the conversation, the community rating of the person to whom their child was speaking, and the category of the flagged content. Parents can log on to the web service to see more detail about the conversation and flagged content, extending the database by the way.
Currently, the service is free to download, with restricted use on IM screen names. Government agencies, libraries, and schools have the wild card.
