Education: IM teens are still doing good at English grammar

Teens spending their time on Wikipedia are considered to attend Harvard University ― at least. But what would turn teens spending their time chatting over IMs? Stupid? Answer from Sali Tagliamonte and Derek Denis, two linguists of University of Toronto, who studied language patterns of teenage IM chatters:
“Everybody thinks kids are ruining their language by using instant messaging, but these teens’ messaging shows them expressing themselves flexibly through all registers. They actually show an extremely lucid command of the language. We shouldn’t worry.”
Their study finds that instant messaging language does mirror patterns in speech, but with a broader spectrum. While teens are adopting informal forms, they also use formal writing phrasing, some “uncool” Shakespearian words that give extra points at the SAT.
