Helio rumored to die soon

It’s supposed to be tough and strong as a wrestling champion, but instead, Helio might be struggling, facing some big financial problems. Some rumors describes the new MVNO (mobile operator that doesn’t own its infrastructure) to spend up to $300 to sign up a new subscriber. Way to high for a new born company.

SK Telecom and Earthlink, the two companies that brought Helio into life, have heavily invested into using Sprint EV-DO networks, up to $440 million according to MobileMag. Helio is now running out of funds to create related sales networks. And said a source: “The problem is that the parent companies are likely to be reluctant to additional financial inject even before the launch of the service.”

This is slightly different from what Helio CEO, Sky Dayton, claimed to Engadget. In short: Helio will register a bunch of new users because they’ll quickly realize that its service is cheap and “really different”.

For the record, Helio is a mobile phone service targeting high schoolers and college students. So far, it broke the news with two major deals, one with MySpace to reach its members, and one another with Yahoo for 3G multimedia services.
