Helio has its GPS phone

Could the GPS technology become a marketing argument to sell more cellphones? And to teenagers in particular? According to Helio, it could be. The SK Telecom/Earthlink joint-venture MVNO, very keen on this market segment, has dished up a cellphone embedding a global positioning system.

The device is called Drift and manufactured by Samsung. It could launch some Google maps, traffic indications or bus direction. Cool but not enough. And Helio should know it, because it also added a social feature called Buddy Beacon that could spark some big interest.

Instead of calling or text messaging, Helio users would just hit a button to share their coordinates to their pals. It’s so simple that we wonder why other GPS manufacturers haven’t rolled out one before. And for the viral effect, as it is very suitable to a social group that uses to move to a lot, there’s a big chance it could hook up some people to GPS.
