And now there’s (finally) Helio

Helio launches today. Although the company is named after the sun, the new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) will have a lot to prove before disrupting the telecoms industry. Several days ago (see Helio rumored to die soon), some sources indicated the heavy infrastructures Helio has to rent from Nortel and that this prevent the new company from launching big marketing campaigns.

But back to Helio offers, now. There are two kinds. The All-In membership, which gives an access to users’ MySpace account, unlimited access to the wireless Internet, downloadings at the 3G speed, text and video instant messaging. Plans start at $85 to $135 a month.

The second offer is the A-la-carte membership, pretty much the same services except it gives only 500 minutes for $40 per month. Two handsets are also available. The Hero ($275) and the Kickflip ($250).

If things are going right, Helio’s partnership with MySpace will drive a bunch of teens to its services. Analysts also insists that under such a scenario, 3G technology will finally kick off (see MySpace and Facebook predict a rush on 3G cellphones).

UPDATE (May 02, 2006) ― According to Market Watch, Helio expects to sign 3 million subscribers by the end of 2009, but declined to comment on its profitability by this deadline.
