Rest in peace, GTalkr

Gtalkr has closed its doors. Gtalkr was a project co-founded by Wes and Dudley Carr, to bring the Google Talk voice client into a web-based Flash-support environment (see our review) but didn’t manage to get out from the beta version.

“It looks like 2006 is going to be a good year for Gtalkr and Gtalkr users,” they wrote on the Gtalkr blog back in early January. But now, there just is this short almost shy “Goodbye…” last message explaining that “unfortunately, the Gtalkr instant messaging client is no longer available. The Gtalkr website has been taken down while we pursue new projects as Google employees.”

No more details available. Did they lack venture money to keep developing their interface? Is bundling GTalk a too risky strategy to get web-based VoIP taken off? Did Google force them to shut down the service? Will users, especially who had been relying on the service to read their email and RSS feeds, be able to backup their data? Is the beginning of the end of the Web 2.0? We’ll try to get answers for all those questions.

Anyhow, it’s the end of an era. But now, Jajah remains the only service to offer a web-based VoIP service. And Jajah seems to be healthy, commercially celebrating the today’s Mother’s Day.
