A MySpace for cellphone users: Groovr

Goovr opened its doors just two days before the end of 2006. It basically is a photo-sharing web site like WebShots and consorts, but looks like they match Shozu principles with group message services like Y! Mixd, Joopz or Moblabber. As a result, the site toolbox heavily rely on text messages, and members just need a cellphone to navigate through its photo database.

Here’s how it works: Users text their locations before uploading photos taken from their cellphones with camera, or comments their own set of pictures. They can also request friends’ pictures and locations, and chat with them by SMS.

Groovr concept is a good idea — but quite premature. Text messages are on the rise in the US, but are still expensive. Sending and receiving bunch of pictures might rapidly dry one’s cellphone plan. A Java mobile applet would be welcomed.
