Goowy web-based IM is out

So its beta version is now history. Goowy yesterday launched its instant messenger and online storage space. The San Diego-based start-up, in which Marc “Mr. Digital movie theater” Cuban poured some big money, has now several interesting applications that brings the concept of Web OS (Operating System) a little closer to us.

Now, a glimpse in their “webtop” (web desktop). Three kinds of application are available for free. You can manage your personal communications (IM, email, contacts, and calendar); stock and share your files; aggregate your web data (minis for weather, stocks, news, rss feeds, pictures, to do lists, music and more).

The Goowy instant messenger is nicely designed and can access to the most popular IM, like MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger or AOL AIM. But it misses to provide voice features. This is so sad as VoIP would boost their popularity and get them ahead NetVibes, their French big competitor, or GTalkr, another competitor but for the instant messenger service.

But, now, if you’re a die-hard Flash user, you’ll find a sweet relief in Goowy. The developing team is a bit “old school”; the web interface is not fueled by Ajax functionalities. Instead, it’s running on Flash technology, which usually tends to slow the page load time but offers nicer customization.
