Google Talk(s) more, adds three new features

What we like is that Google isn’t copying competitors’ features. It’s the distinction between providing what consumers want and fostering new habits. And in the new Google Talk beta release, two of the three new functionalities are just truly original for an IM.

  • File transfers. This one is a catch-on feature, although we’d like Google to try some one-to-many file sharing and not just one-to-one.
  • Voicemail. A good idea, very useful for people just like us who don’t keep their Gmail account opened the whole day. Voicemails will go directly in recipients’ Gmail box as file attachments and there are no time restrictions. Note that with this move, Google ties Microsoft in the online storage race; Microsoft announced some time ago that Windows Live accounts could become a storage for any phone, cellphone and VoIP system voicemails.
  • Music status. Another good feature that uses the social network power to increase the interest in GTalk. The list of compatible music players is short but contains all the most popular players of the moment: Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, Yahoo Music engine.

If Google Talk keeps adding three features in a row at each update, the voice client could reach its stable version 1.0 until the end of the year.
