Apple Phone, okay, now Google Phone

Could Google steal the thunder from Apple and its iPhone? The Observer reported Google and France Telecom’s Orange have started a Google Phone project, which would be a branded Google phone, and which probably also carry Orange’s logo. The device, not expected before 2008, would not be revolutionary: “manufactured by HTC, it might have a screen similar to a video iPod. But it would have built-in Google software which would dramatically improve on the slow and cumbersome experience of surfing the web from a mobile handset.”
This collaboration between the second biggest European telecoms company and the world biggest search engine presets a new battle. From one side, Apple or Nokia looking for the ‘wow’ design power and media contents. From the other, Google, its engineering brain and multiple services easy to integrate into mobile handsets. And if Google is teaming up with Orange, owned by France Telecom, the second largest mobile platform in Europe, Apple might finally stay longer outside the cellphone market or be forced to find one or several mobile carrier before launching its device.
