A Gizmo in LiveJournal

It’s not MySpace but it’s not that bad, just around 10 million blogs. Gizmo moves in the LiveJournal toolkit. “Gizmo Project is doing a white label deal with SixApart that will allow users of Live Journal to contact their “friends” via IM and Voice using Gizmo,” reports Andy Abramson, a Gizmo Project lover.

Voice features are clearly what could attract SixApart to the deal. Besides Google Talk, we don’t any other companies with that expertise and culture in open source VoIP projects. LiveJournal development team already integrated Jabber/XMPP functionalities, easing the upgrade.

Besides instant messaging, the software will enable LJ users to use the Internet to call other computers, landlines and mobile phones (also known as VOIP). LJ users at the Plus and Paid level will easily be able to make voice posts to LiveJournal via VOIP.

Note that Skype has its SkypeWeb that could fit into a SixApart’s Movable Type site.

I don’t think it is true.
For instance, Abbeynet has been working in the VoIP field since 1999 and Abbeyphone VOW (Voice over Web) is the result of their expertise. Web-based italian giants like Wind-Libero and Repubblica in Italy chose VOW to offer services to their communities (Libero + Repubblica user are more than 20M) because its deep integration into the web experience of the end user.
But, since we are not in north America, it seems more difficult for Abbeynet to spread its brand ;-)

  • Luca, sorry for letting you asides. I didn’t know Abbeynet develops under some open source licenses. The thing is that your company doesn’t communicate on this aspect.
