Gizmo 2.0, Asterisked new version

The new Gizmo Project is on stage. Gizmo 2.0, or better named: Gizmo Asterisked, because the new Asterisk support is its main attraction. A double login gives access to one’s Gizmo account and to another SIP-based server.

The Michael Robertson’s softphone seems to chill down from hunting Skype, leaving MSN Live Messenger, AIM or Yahoo doing this job. Instead, according to Russell Shaw, from ZDNet blogs, the open source voice client has new ambitions: Becoming the SJLabs and CounterPath softphones killer.

The Gizmo 2.0 comes with a configuration wizard to ease the support with Asterisk system. Incoming calls from the traditional landline phone line would then be identified from the Gizmo calls for example. And the voice client gives the choice to route the calls through an Asterisk or another SIP-based server. something that would delight companies waiting to try to Internet telephony.

Windows and Mac users can already download it. Linux aficionados have to wait a bit. Not because development on the Linux platform has been left asides but because SIPphone plans to roll out a compatible version for the open source Nokia 770 Internet tablet. Google Talk has already brought its IM on the tablet, but could not trigger SIP-based calls.
