Fritz Mini does VoIP before the iPod

The AVM unveiled its Fritz! Mini (German company for a very German named product but it sounds like an oxymora as it’s Fritz!!!… mini) It basically is a iPod-like music player, with a conventional USB connection, blasting out music on a 16-bit audio speakers. But oh look, it also is a wireless phone! At least, it meets all the criteria to provide Internet telephony: 802.11g WLAN compatibility, call waiting, call forwarding, notification of personal phone calls, email and text messages, news, weather or sports reports displayed on a color screen. No details were mentioned on some Skype or other SIP softphone preloaded in the handset.

Now, its dark side. It misses out to provide two features:

  • a pad to dial phone numbers – and to send email replies
  • a voice recording functionality to make podcasting easier.

Last words: the Fritz! Mini needs its mother WLAN router to get connected to the Internet. Our question is: Is it capable to plug in public WiFi networks? Otherwise it would remain a nice new piece of home furniture whereas it could become the next VoIP iPod killer that Steve Job’s already planning to launch in next September. Fritz Mini should be available everywhere by the end of the year.
