Podcasts for phones: Fonpods

Fonpods drum rolls at DEMOFall 06. It showcased its proprietary platform designed to provide podcasts and audio contents through a landline, mobile or VoWLAN phone. In short, everyone has a satellite radio.

The process is pretty simple: Sign up, browse the podcast catalog, add them to your account and listen to them on your phone dialing a specific number. You can also reverse the process by podcasting yourself on your phone. And all the service is free.

Currently, the Fonpods directory of podcasts isn’t that big, but enough to give a try. And it’s one of the critical variable that could help get ahead of competitors, like VoiceIndigo (reviewed here). The other criteria is the social networking ability and the quality of audio. Zune is expected to do that.

While Fonpods jumps in the VoIP and podcasting trend, we wonder if this idea could threaten their close source business model: It is already possible to set an open source Asterisk server, enhanced by the Asterisk Jukebox tool. So why not setting one and let people listen to music for free, and modestly cheap. And if you want to make money, you can charged subscription could be proposed to access the catalog of Big Music cartel.
