Fon to end its $1 wireless router promotion

Fon tries to go back on stage. Lately, they lowered the price of their wireless router from $25… to $1.

Of course, the “social router” as they now call it is a pure marketing campaign, but still the offer could reboot a bit the attractiveness of the network. As we write this post, we doubt that a lot of people will see the offer, that (sorry for that) will end on… today, June 8, at 12:30 CET.

But if you can grab one of the Linksys WRT54GL, you can tweak it to turn it into a powerful highly customizable wireless router. This would be great, as this operation will probably one of the last time you see Fon promoting the Linksys router. They recently announced the release of their own router in next September.

Even if the Fon’s network expand, its first and main problem remains sharing the broadband signal. Only a few ISP have accepted the idea of allowing their customers flash their wireless routers or share their Internet access with others. So far, the biggest ISP to team with Fon is French Neuf-Cegetel.
