Fon released its WiFi router firmware

Fon markets its open source side. Its CEO Martin Varsavsky released the firmware code of the Fonera, extra voluminous (holy smoke, 98Mo!!), under the GPL 2.0 open source license. As the code is written in Spanish, one of the first steps would be to translate the code comments and tutorials into English.

It is also possible to download the OpenWrt open source firmware, the one that powers Fon WiFi routers and that is maintained by Sebastian Gottschall, a notorious coder from Dresden, Germany (in picture) and now a Fon employee.

We guess that most of you have heard about Fon. It’s a WiFi network started in Spain earlier this year. Its business model is its biggest advantage: Letting individuals expand its size through their willing to turn their wireless router into a Fon node. Skype, Google and Sequoia Capital have invested in it.
