Fon unveiled a new accessory called la Fontenna that will equip its WiFi router. Its function? Boosting the accessibility range of the hotspot by a factor of 5 to 10. It will make the wireless signals go largely beyond a soccer stadium for example and enough to blanket your whole neighborhood with just one device.

Fontennas will be available around 9.95 euros but the company “will probably give them away for free or for only the shipping to all of those Foneros who have shown that they keep their La Foneras on over time”, says Fon’s CEO Martin Varsavsky. So far, we don’t know if the Fontenna, expected to be introduced in May 2007, could be compatible with other WiFi routers.
