Text messaging government ministers, in Latin

This one is just for your culture. To make more “latin-aware”. And could definitively be filed under “the innovative Finnish presidency” of the European Union.

First, the Finland foreign minister sets a new rule: Don’t call me, I’ll text message you. Government ministers have special phones equipped to handle e-mails, said a government spokeswoman to AP (via textually). “The prime minister prefers text messages. He doesn’t like voice mail especially when he is in a meeting.”

Second, the official website of the EU presidency now shows a Latin section. Who cares of Latin? Who can speak it fluently? The Pope. “The Vatican actually continues to teach Latin at its university and publish all of its official documents in Latin, including the Pope’s encyclicals,” explains Bruno Giussani on his blog.

Anyway, want some new words of modern Latin? A “Football player” is a Sphaerista. A “Slot machine” is translated into Sphaeriludium electricum numismate actum. And above all, stop using “Computer”, it’s in fact a Instrumentum computatorium.
