Cellphone makers, afraid of exploding batteries, recall them

Laptop batteries could overheat and explode — literally. The problem occurred many times, taped by users, forcing Dell, followed by Sony, to recall them. For cellphones, the same problem is happening too. Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and NTT DoCoMo are cojointly recalling some 1.3 million handsets.

Recalled batteries were made by Sanyo GS Soft Energy Co. during the month of May. They bear one of the following clearly marked three-letter codes: OKA, OLA, PAA, PBA, PCA, PDA or PEA. Sales of the FOMA D902i-, D902iS- and D903i-model handsets made by Mitsubishi Electric will be halted, DoCoMo said.

As a irony of the day, Sony Electronics President Stan Glasgow announces today that Lithium gel are likely becoming the standard material used in notebook batteries. The gel form is supposed to be less dangerous than Lithium ion, but doesn’t provide the same range of energy density.
