Two big earthquakes leave South East Asia disconnected

It’s like a remake of a sad post-Christmas nightmare. Two earthquakes hit South East Asia yesterday. The US Geological Survey and the China Seismological Bureau measured the first one at 7.2 on the Richter scale and the second at 6.7. The epicenter was located at about 350 kilometers from the Chinese mainland and just 15 kilometers from Taiwan. Warnings of a one meter high tsunami headed for the Philippines were issued, but the wave did not make land. The BBC reports two people were killed and some 42 others were injured. Hopefully.

But the couple of earthquakes badly hit the underwater cables. Taiwan biggest telecoms provider, Chunghwa Telecom Co., said damage to its undersea cables had cut off 98% of communication with Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong. China Telecommunications Group said its connections with the US and Europe had been wiped out too. And without fiber optics, no IP telephony. KDDI’s spokesman noted it might get blocked up and further slow down Internet connections if there is too much traffic on that route. Specialists said it would take three weeks to rebuild the phone infrastructure.
