Earthlink steps into the franchise citywide WiFi model

Does Earthlink intend to break into the open source networks or is it trying to build a franchise? At ISPCon (the conference for ISP professionals), Bill Topeglian, vice president of corporate development for EarthLink, unveiled the idea of sharing its now bullet-proofed technology against partnerships.
Topeglian said that there are about 750 major cities in the U.S., with 31 million households, covering an area of 17,000 square miles, that are ripe for municipal wireless, explained ISP planet.
“EarthLink doesn’t have the resources to do this deployment and could not do it in an aggressive time frame,” he said. “We need partners to build the infrastructure, own it, and allow roaming.”
But things get a little bit more complex on how Earthlink is willing to do this. EarthLink would like a right of first refusal in the case the WISP decides to sell its network. ISP Planet reported that this condition worried several attendees, and during the Q&A session, Topeglian backed out.
