Dotmobi are the domain names dedicated to websites seen on cellphones. And if you want to follow or rival Nokia and Docomo, Google, Yahoo, XBox Live or MSN Live on this, it’s time to throw $25 out of your purse. Registration for dotmobi domain names are now open to public. There’s a minimum two-year period.
Unlike any other websites designed to be view on a mobile phone, dotmobi websites will have to comply with standards set by Mobile Top Level Domain, the industrial association which monitors the domain names. The standards are a set of rules to follow in order to bring a better user experience to mobile end-users.
There are big chances that startups operating in the social networking field jump on a dotmobi name. Recently, the trend has start off with the launch of Digg mobile, closely followed by its Spanish clone Meneame mobile, and other social networks that want to tease teens on their mobile. (MTLD also has a demo site)
UPDATE — More than 75,000 dotmobi domain names were registered Tuesday in the first day of the open registration period for the wireless Web sites, according to the Mobile Top Level Domain.
