DOPA: Every one looses, social networks, teens, IM, and MVNO

A new law could slash social network user base and hamper their growth. “The Deleting Online Predators Act (DOPA) tries to limit the access paedophiles have to the networking sites which have become hugely popular with minors,” says the BBC.

If the act passes ― and it has already been approved by a large majority in the House of Representatives, 410 to 15 votes ―, American children could be banned from using social networking sites in schools and libraries.

If the act passes, MySpace, Bebo, Facebook and competitors might face a severe breakdown. And if those big sites slow down, instant messaging and softphones companies might also experience a very bad moment, as plenty of them are all willing to bundle a large social network.

More indirectly, 3G services could face a hard time. Many analysts expected social networks and teens networks to lead to 3G mass adoption. Helio and new MVNOs such as universities willing to provide 3G services to their students, would suddenly loose their interest.

Up to now, protesters to the DOPA react by issuing an online petition on MySpace, called Save your Space. The campaign is aiming to collect some 1 million signatures within a month.
