Which domain names for Internet telephony?

Every week, Internet domain names Arch supervisor, the ICANN, receive a bunch of new domain name submissions. Once in a while, it accept some of them, sparks raging polemics from time to time ― as for the ‘.xxx’ domain names dedicated to the porn industry ―, or reaches a small interest, as ‘.tv’ for broadcasting web sites or ‘.museum’ for what you guess. This time, the ICANN chose to create the ‘.tel’ and ‘.mobi’ brother domain names.

Only for mobiles

Mobiles phones users are now numerous enough to get their own domain names. “More people have access to an Internet-ready phone than to a PC with Internet access” even stated Mobile Top Level Domain CEO Neil Edwards. His Ireland based company has been granted by the ICANN to supervise this domain name. And as a company backed by Vodafone, Hutchinson, Telefonica Mobiles… Microsoft and Google(!), mTLD will strive to boost mobile Internet web.

Anyway, the ‘dotMobi’, expected to be introduced on next May 22, 2006, should clearly separate Internet web sites unreadable on a tiny screen from those designed for mobile devices. mTLD also makes things easier for web designers with a white paper on web sites for mobile, available on their ‘mobisite‘. For the curious, there’s a demo site, here.

A super business card

Until now, the ICANN just acknowledged the ‘.tel’ domain name proposition. Its board hasn’t yet made its mind nor given a date for eventual acceptance, but according to CNN, if approved, the ‘dotTel’ could be launched this year.

The idea of Telnic Ltd., based in London and author of the draft, consists of garnering every number and address into one place. A kind of super contact book, if you prefer. Users would then supposedly provide their always accurate contact references. And still supposedly, such a domain could be used by mobile devices or Internet telephony applications. For instance, Skype and its Webpresence feature.

Both domain names are suitable for Internet telephony, don’t you think? Which one would you pick? And how would you use your chosen one?
