Did Apple confirm the iPhone trademark?

Apple has filed a trademark application on the term “iPhone.” The application was made last month and is currently examined by the Far Eastern trademark office. The object is described as an “handheld and mobile digital electronic devices for the sending and receiving of telephone calls, faxes, electronic mail, and other digital data”, plus the MP3 and other digital format audio player, according to Apple Insider.

So it’s an official confirmation, right? No, there’s a doubt.

It’s not the first time Apple filed a trademark application, with quite the same description. In 2002, some sources spotted the “iPhone” trademark registered in Australia. The filed application qualifies such a device able to do “Communication by computer, communication between computers, electronic sending of data and stands on Internet or other data bank, supply of data and news by electronic sending.”

So most probably, the Apple VoIP handheld would be named iPhone. But yet, there still is a problem, the “iPhone” is officially taken by Nuvio, an “Internet Phone” company.
