Counter noise with noise: ChatterBlocker

What a call center, a business center, a cybercafe and the Sahara desert haven’t in common? Well, many things if you think twice, but mostly the silence. And how to stay focused on your work when noise surrounds you? Build your own bubble. ChatterBlocker, says Slashdot, is a PC program that uses digital audio technology to neutralize the sound of speech and other distractions.

The software will pulse anti-noises. Positive noise and negative noise makes silence, as we learned in school. But the software maker warns: “Good quality noise canceling headphones are great for reducing low-frequency sounds, such as airplane engine rumble, but they are not as effective in the 2 to 8 kHz consonant range that conveys much of the speech intelligibility.”
