VoIP saves money, and VoIP sparks some greed, from those who have to face its soaring popularity. Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd., the largest telecommunications company in Taiwan, blamed VoIP to suck down its last year’s revenue generated from long distance phone calls.
The drop is meaningful: around 4.1% in one year. Who’s responsible for this? Skype, the most popular softphone worldwide and in the tech-savvy island. The PCHome Online web site, which is hosting the software, has recorded no less than 11 million downloads so far.
Chunghwa Telecom will react by entering the VoIP market, but will not run a free VoIP service. “Not the business model we’re looking at”, Fufu Shen, a representative for the company, said to InfoWorld.
