Free broadband is on the way

The technique isn’t new but provides many advantages. Apple did it with iTunes, selling songs less than one buck to entice more people into getting their iPod. UK-based cellphone retailer Carphone might do it too.

Although not many details of their plans has been undisclosed, some financial analysts expected Carphone to launch a free broadband Internet access. The service will of course target UK households, in a market largely dominated by British Telecom and Wanadoo UK.

The Carphone strategy could pay off. In the best scenario, it would grab some precious market shares, quickly reach the critical user base and go open some bottles of champagne to celebrate that.

But that’s the best scenario only, and Carphone refused to comment on this free broadband Internet access.

The big problem with this kind of situation is whether you win twice your bet, whether some providers come with an ad-supported free offer and bury you alive. And just across the Atlantic, there’s some cowboys like Google who could do this.

Anyway, according to ZDNet, “analysts saw the company reporting continuing strong growth in its mainstay mobile retailing business, with robust growth in sales of mobile connections.”
