Bye bye European telecoms monopolies

Viviane Reding, the European commissioner responsible for Information Society and Media, makes the news. Again. Some times ago, European pro Linux got to know her when she was involved in the ultra debated EU software patent case.

This time, Mrs. Reding said she planned to publish proposals that would break European biggest mobile operators, to encourage safer competition between rivals, to spur some extra growth.

If the proposal is approved ― which could take more than a year at least ―, Orange via France Telecom and T-Mobile owned by Deutche Telekom would be amputated.

“I believe that the policy option of structural separation could answer many competition problems that Europe’s telecom markets are still facing today. Perhaps we have to be as radical as regulators were in the US in the 1980s to make real progress?”, the Register reported.

Reuters says Reding’s proposals plans “to cut the number of retail telecoms market segments regulated by EU telecoms law by a third, and use competition law instead to stamp out abuses of dominant positions.”

So far, only Vodafone has reacted to the proposal. A spokesman said the company was ‘certainly supportive’ of any measures aimed at reducing current regulations on the use of radio spectrum.
