‘Free’ broadband mania in the UK: The BSkyB turn

James Murdoch, the Rupert Murdoch’s son, got his gun. He engaged its BSkyB into the broadband Battle of Britain.

The UK satellite broadcaster unveiled its ‘free’ plan to convert its huge customer base into triple-play users. ‘Free’ a la BSkyB means a 2Mbps Internet connection and a 2 GB monthly usage tolerance at no extra cost than the cable monthly subscription. Under those restrictive conditions, cable users would just have a tiny snapshot of what could bring Internet access, VoIP telephone, and broadband television.

And Murdoch’s announced some $730 million to be poured into the broadband plan by 2010. But that’s not enough to impress the City and its analysts. Yesterday, BSkyB’s share lost points.

Maybe that the recent confirmation given by James Murdoch of a possible buyout of AOL UK might enlighten his aura a bit.
