Boingo WiFi now open source

Boingo expands in two directions in the same time. First, the WiFi hotspot aggregator comes to the open source world. And in the same time, it is biting into the handheld market, with the launch of its embedded WiFi toolkit.
If this doesn’t speak to you that much, a embedded WiFi toolkit is something immensely valuable to a programmer to develop a complete WiFi connection management system for handhelds.
Boingo understands that interoperability is lacking in the device ecosystem. And that could give an considerable advantage. Right now, every handheld manufacturer comes with its own standards, trying to grow fast enough to become the de facto standards. Releasing into an open source would foster some developments based on its toolkit (it’s indirect marketing) and will certainly enhance softwares.
But Boingo still have to show its commitment and not utterly snob independent developers. As WiFi Networking News reported: In an interview, Boingo president and chief executive David Hagan explained that they wanted to put their authentication software out into a broader community of use to spread experience with their code base for companies that might want to partner with Boingo. “We’re not looking for the college student in his room who is coding at midnight,” Hagan said.
From a business model point of view, Boingo has opted for the dual licensing model for its Embedded WiFi toolkit. That means the toolkit will be freely available to anybody, as in beer and in speech, and that commercial partners which want some specific development will contract Boingo. So far, this model has demonstrated its efficiency with MySQL, the database open source software that powers zillions of websites and 21talks.
