Boingo grabs $65 million

Boingo, the hotspot aggregator, announced it raised $65 million from new and existing investors for further developments indeed but also to buy out Concourse Communications.

“Some of the money will be used to further develop our Boingo Embedded program, which is working closely with carriers, handset manufacturers, chipset manufacturers, and FMC companies ― like VoIP service providers ― to integrate global commercial WiFi roaming into dual-mode handsets, WiFi handsets, and other WiFi-enabled mobile devices through our open-source software,” says Christian Gunning, Boingo’s marketing communications director to industry magazine Unstrung.

Boingo now operates the neutral-host networks installed and maintained by Concourse at three New York City airports, two Chicago airports and other top 100 airports, including Toronto, Ottawa, Detroit, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City and Nashville - with walled-garden access at Atlanta.

The funding was led by Mitsui & Co, and new investors include Steelpoint Capital Partners and Red Rock Ventures.
