In-flight broadband access: not profitable

How does in-flight broadband access nowadays? Apparently, not that good. According to the Wall Street Journal, Boeing is considering selling or even closing Connexion, its in-flight Internet unit.

“We know we have a useful product, but we’re trying to determine how good a business we have,” Boeing spokesman John Dern said.

Commercial-satellite operators and other potential suitors who might be interested in buying the business have been contacted by the airplane manufacturer.

Connexion, which has been evaluated at around $150 million, gives broadband access to a handful of airline companies. Among them, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines.

UPDATE, June 26, 2006 ― Boeing officially confirmed it’s planning to sell Connexion. Some of its Connexion partners, like Lufthansa or Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), might be interested in a buyout.
