See BlackBerry as your next desktop phone

BlackBerry sees itself as the replacement for desktop phones. David Heit, senior product manager in charge of developing the Blackberry Exchange Server platform for RIM (Research In Motion), said in a recent interview:
“As more of your desktop phone features become available on your handheld you’ll end up using them interchangeably. We’re looking at voice-over-IP as a major direction, so that instead of giving an employee a desktop phone, you give them a Blackberry, so it’s a mobile phone device as well as a secure connection for email. And when you add the mobile application capability we’ve been talking about, then you’re really talking about true convergence.”
It makes sense. WiFi networks are popping in every major metro area. Broadband Internet spread fast. Voicemail are becoming increasingly popular… But it looks so much like the period of 1998-2001, when white collar employee were dreaming on their Palm to reach their email box from anywhere.
