Before the iPhone, the “iPhone server”

After the iPod+Nike, the iPod for joggers and athletic people, here’s another interesting combination that extends functionalities of Apple devices. 4S Newcom, a German VoIP system manufacturer, has rolled out s an iPod Shuffle that can operate as an IP BX.
Here’s how it works: The iPod Shuffle holds the complete system, “from OS to IP PBX” says the release in Light Reading. Used separately, the iTunes tiny music player operates as usual. But when plugged in a Mac, for example a low-cost Mac Mini, the combined device becomes an IP PBX, meaning it acts as a telephone system switch that supports VoIP.
A cute idea combined to a cute Apple design. Great, although we’d like to see 4S providing a USB key with some cross-platform systems able to handle the same job. For the record, many Mac computers come with WiFi connectivity, so you can become a telephone operator on your own. Check also GigaOm, which picked the iBlue too.

Great design! But isn’t it a waste to use the Mac mini for only that? As I understand it runs Linux. Wouldn’t it be greater to by able to use some other software too while it is running as a PBX?
Very glad to hear from a MacUser :) I think it too.
