Keep smiling. The adage also works with avatars.

If you own an e-business site and plan to add an avatar that could convert text to speech (this may be cool if you remember Boo.com version 1.0), be sure to remove the sad emotions. According to a recent study published in the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, “digital characters might be better merchants if they act consistently happy,” even if the products they’re selling are useless or dumb.
The study also provides two other findings. One: People react more strongly to realistic-looking characters. Two: People share personal information more readily with avatars that better synchronize face and voice.
This discovery might be huge for IA researchers, but well, isn’t it natural that we, human beings, prefer human-like robots to pure machines, and that we prefer smiling faces to close faces?
