But the new service will save only one tiny dollars for those who will make the move. The reason is simple: The standalone DSL cost $45, whereas the bundling mode costs $30 a month but requires households to register for a $16 phone service.
AT&T spokesman John Britton said the standalone price accurately reflects the real cost of DSL, but “consumer advocates said the price of AT&T’s standalone DSL is evidence that AT&T is not interested in giving its customers the choice of unbundled service but is intent on pushing telecommunications packages on them even if they don’t need it,” wrote the SF Gate.
