Another patent from Apple, published today by the US Patent & Trademark Office, may clear some rumors supposing the iPhone to be touchless. The patent, entitled ‘Mechanical Overlay’, pictures a touchscreen basic layout that can be mounted by various accessories like an iPod clickwheel, keyboard, or audio mixer.

It’s a plug-and-play situation. Imagine you want to turn your iBook into a game console, you would just clip a joystick. And to set your laptop as an iPod, just clip the iPod wheel. All those clip peripherals can be tailored to different devices. The iPhone can for instance be switched back or customized to a regular iPod, or a personal communicator (like the Sony Mylo) if needed. MacNN has more details on the Apple patent.
