AOL 2.0 to introduce its “Helio” service

Step by step, AOL is introducing AOL 2.0, which means be more Web 2.0-ish, and even more like MySpace. The ISP has already unveiled its new MySpace clone pages, VoIP-enabled new instant messenger, and video social sharing service. Now, AOL Germany CEO Charles Fränkl announced that its company is going to launch its own mobile virtual network operator this year.

Such a mobile phone service mostly targets AOL young adults members, which “could launch Skype if they want to,” says Fraenkl in an interview given to the Berliner Zeitung (via i4u). They would then connect to their AOL pages, upload photos, check emails, refresh their blogs, and IM people.

Clearly, the new service is the AOL answer to Helio, which bundles MySpace. And from a marketing point of view, if AOL Germany could introduce the new offer before the soccer World Cup, they would get a hit, as kids will massively use their mobile phones to swap pictures and informations on the world competition.

  • I found this interesting as well and it has some deep implications for AOL, a company in a lot of trouble. I think it will fail Here is why.
