AOL to lay off 25% of its work force

First sign of AOL turning free: Freed employees. AOL is going to eliminate at least 5,000 jobs (25% of its work force) over the next 6 months, with this distribution: 3,000 jobs throughout Europe, and 2,000 bye-byes in the US, mainly among customer service squads.

Says AOL vice chairman Ted Leonsis on his AOL blog: “I don’t believe the change is as dramatic as everyone in the media is speculating.  We have been a subscription based business ― primarily in the ISP and connectivity business ― that also created a media business component” .

There is at least one ‘dramatic’ change. AOL is leaving the Old Continent quite soon. Its French division is about to be sold to Neuf Cegetel, so do the British and German sister companies.
