AOL Germany is done. The European unit of AOL is going under the Telecom Italia ownership. The sellout has been closed at around $870 million, in cash. The German subsidiary ISP claims 1.1 million broadband users and 1.3 dial-up subscribers, which ranks it second for the country behind Deutsche Telekom.
Many press article told about Telecom Italia these days. About its decision to sell its mobile unit, TIM, that Romano Prodi, the Italian Prime minister, qualified of “surprised and disconcerted”. Both government and telco went to clash on this case and this weekend, the Telecom Italia chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera stepped down.
Anyway, analysts chilly welcome the decision. Dan Bieler, of London-based consulting and research firm Ovum, said to the SF Chronicle that “whilst AOL Germany no doubt brings expertise in online advertising, we are less certain that it is in a position to operate a portal that caters to the tastes of existing Alice customers.”
AOL Germany is the first of the 3 AOL units operating in Europe. AOL France is about to be sold to Neuf Cegetel for around $383 million. And even higher for AOL UK.
