An Apple patent describes a new touchless iPod

After five years of rolling wheel, Apple really thinks it’s time to change. To invent another scrolling system. Apple bye-byes the disk navigation that made its iPod a modern design icon, with a third potential touchless navigation system, described in a patent filed by the company. But the new one, a touch-sensitive frame surrounding the display, should be less disruptive, though.
The design candidate proposes a selection pad that doesn’t interfere with content display. This would be suitable for making a wider screen iPod. So it’s smart. But doing also limit functionalities accessible through the buttons. And that’s a big drawback in the Apple quest to integrate WiFi-enhanced functionalities and more communication applications.
Also, note that Nokia has already designed a prototype based on this idea. Its Aeon phone combines a screen display, and a touch-sensitive dialing pad — which could be customized by users.
