Adverts move into MSN Messenger

You don’t sell on eBay, you don’t register to any Amazon affiliate programs or whatsoever, you don’t provide any consultancy on Ether or WDeal, so you cannot make money online? Wrong.

5Sai, a Chinese social networking marketing site, found a way to do it. Here’s how it works: “After registering in 5Sai, you have to add a 5Sai MSN bot as your contact. The bot will verify the number of your MSN contacts, only users whose MSN contacts exceed 50 will be qualified to apply for the service. Then, you can choose an advertising text to be included in your MSN Messenger name.”

“Since 5Sai allows advertisers to specify target MSN users’ region, gender or age, MSN users can only choose from advertising pool which matches their profile. If a user’s MSN Messenger is online for at least 3 hours during 9 am to 18 pm at working day, it will be regarded as a valid exposure.” (Note: as we don’t speak any Chinese, we rely on the China Web 2.0 Review blog for its description)

As South-East Asian Internet users are jumping on IMs, the idea sounds very interesting. Especially if it’s working on MSN Messengers, used by 61% of worldwide IM users, according to ComScore.

UPDATE, Oct. 11, 2006 — Our Chinese translator, Sean, found out the 5Sai ads in IM doesn’t provide cash rewards. Instead, clicks on ads generate points, that members could use in exchange of gifts in the 5Sai catalog.
